At last night's board meeting, we celebrated our Board of Trustees as part of School Board Appreciation Month. The walls of the admin building were lined with art from schools, and a small reception was hosted by the City Council PTO. During the meeting, the proclamation issued by Gov. Abbott was read by Sam Houston fourth-grade students Will Jimerson and Reid Haynes.
The pledges were led by Sam Houston students Matilda Rojas, Natalia Olvera, and Jonael Puerto.
The Maverick Mile Award was given to Mrs. Jovita Ortiz-Puerto at Sam Houston. Mrs. Johnson said, "Mrs. Vita is the heart of our campus. She currently serves in the role of secretary, but has worked her way through Sam Houston, starting as a paraprofessional, then receptionist before becoming campus secretary. Mrs. Vita is a warm face and a bubbly personality. She keeps everyone straight, ensuring that all needs are met. If you need ANYTHING at Sam Houston, just go see Mrs. Vita. In addition to fulfilling her role as secretary, she makes sure that everyone feels encouraged and loved. She takes time to decorate for every occasion, considers ways to make the students and staff feel joy while on campus and much more. Mrs. Vita definitely goes "above and beyond" for every student, parent and staff member of Sam Houston. She is deserving of this acknowledgment and so much more."
