The Home of the Mavericks

Marshall High School serves as the only high school in the Marshall Independent School District in Marshall, Texas. MHS began operations on Sept. 12, 1898, in a building leased from Marshall University. The first MHS had only two teachers, 30 students and five subjects -- Latin, English, History, Math and Science. Today, MHS is home to approximately 150 staff members and 1,500 students and is the largest school district in Harrison County. A successful bond issue in 1976 led to the construction and opening of the current school in 1980. The $6.7 million, 212,000-square foot facility had an initial capacity of 1,600 students and basic facilities for 2,000. Features included a 2,000-seat gym with three courts; 600-seat auditorium, mult-tiered dining area for 500 and separation of academic classes from shop, band and choir areas. Outside the building were a 7,000-seat stadium with all-weather track, a 12,000-square foot field house, six tennis courts and a baseball field. A ninth-grade wing was added in 1988, and a supplemental field house for spring sports was added. In 1993 came a 2,000-seat addition to the visitor's side of Maverick Stadium, a new track and an addition to the band hall.

Savings from funds from the Legacy 2017 bond project in MISD, along with general fund balance and annual general fund budgeting, has allowed MHS to receive a facelift since 2017. Most notably, the entire building has been renovated with new lighting, new walls and new floor and ceiling tiles, along with a security entrance and new security doors. The science labs have been completely renovated and updated to current TEA standards, and all restrooms in the building have undergone a complete renovation. Maverick Gym has been renovated with a new gym floor and bleacher seating, and Maverick Stadium received a new artificial turf surface as well as new lighting and a new press box. Both the Maverick baseball and softball fields have also received artificial turf surfaces, and a new co-curricular, covered pavilion opened in the fall of 2020 for use by all MHS and MISD students and organizations.
